At his son's betrothal ball, Vosk Hammerfist cornered him in the Great Hall over the deteriorating conditions of his soldiers. Garrick did not deny the failures: the kingdom has cut funding over fifteen years of peace, and he is paying out of his own pocket to keep men on the wall. He argued he would rather field thirty thousand disgruntled soldiers than five thousand unprepared ones, because he has seen the Abyss and does not believe the peace will hold. He hinted the Montclair marriage may bring in additional funds.

At his son's engagement party he had retired from the courtyard to the great hall to sit with his personal butler, and most guests gave him a wide berth; he was visibly surprised when a serving girl simply offered him hors d'oeuvres and a glass of champagne.

When the Adventurers' building blew, he teleported to his tower, armed up in seconds, told the party to stay, and teleported out toward the fire. He was still absent when the manor fight ended.
