The kobold cleric came to the ball chasing an illness: people had been getting injured and sick for reasons nobody could explain. Around the same time he lost contact with his own god and stopped receiving healing power at all. Someone offered to restore the connection, and because there were people to help, he took it without asking who was offering.
He calls the patron the man behind the door, and he has been casting on borrowed authority ever since. Nobody at the table thought that was going to stay a footnote.
